“She didn’t have to tell us that,” Cass whispered. “She wanted us to know.”

We caught up with her just as she was entering the cantina’s kitchen.

“Abigail, wait,” I said. She turned to us and I lowered my voice. “We’d love to talk with you about this more. Somewhere private, if you’d like?”

“I can’t,” she answered, though her eyes seemed to suggest otherwise.

“You can trust us,” Cass said.

“Please, don’t ask me anymore,” Abigail replied, her usual smile replaced by a firm expression. “I shouldn’t have said anything. It just slipped out.”

Cass opened her mouth to respond, but I touched her arm to stop her. I knew we shouldn’t push Abigail. Now we could only go back to our original plan—get to know the other villagers better.
